SOC 103 Introduction to Sociology serves as an invitation to the discipline of Sociology and the study of society. The subject invites students to consider and discover: What is Sociology? How can we think sociologically? How can we use sociological perspectives to understand our social worlds? SOC103 highlights the everyday relevance of Sociology. It provides students with analytical tools to ‘see Sociology in the world’ – to make meaningful connections between the subject matter of the course and their own social worlds; and to challenge taken-for-granted assumptions and uncover underlying rules in their everyday life. Using case studies of globalisation, consumption, inequalities, families, genders, sexualities, migration, race, ethnicities, health and wellbeing, and technology, the subject introduces Sociology’s examination of the complex connections between individual behaviour and wider social forces, contexts and processes. The subject offers students the opportunity to improve communication, analytical, research, interpersonal and critical thinking skills vital for employment.
